Generator transfer switch installation in Oklahoma City, so a portable generator powers the house safely

A portable generator is only useful in an outage if it can reach the furnace, the fridge and the lights without extension cords through a window. A transfer switch or interlock makes that safe and quick.

Quick answer

A generator transfer setup in Oklahoma City connects a portable generator to the house wiring through an outdoor inlet box, then either a manual transfer switch or a panel interlock kit that makes it impossible to feed the grid and the generator at the same time. You plug in the generator cord, flip the switch or interlock, and choose which circuits to run. We size it to the generator and file the permit.

Why the interlock is the whole point

How a portable generator connects to the house safely

The dangerous way to connect a generator is a double-ended cord plugged into a dryer outlet. It energizes the house wiring, and if the main breaker is on it also energizes the utility line outside, where a line worker expects it to be dead. It can also destroy the generator when the power comes back. It is illegal and it kills people.

The safe way puts a mechanical lockout between the grid and the generator. An inlet box on the outside wall takes the generator cord. Inside, either a small manual transfer switch moves selected circuits from utility to generator, or an interlock plate on the main panel physically prevents the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on at the same time. Both let you run the furnace blower, the fridge and the lights from a generator you already own.

Standby generatorStarts and transfers automaticallyFrequent outages or no one home
Extension cords onlyAppliances plugged straight into the generatorShort outages, a few appliances

What moves the price

What decides the cost of a generator hookup

  • Switch or interlock An interlock kit costs less than a manual transfer switch.
  • Inlet size 30-amp and 50-amp inlets and cable differ.
  • Distance from inlet to panel Longer runs mean more cable and labor.
  • Panel compatibility An interlock must be listed for your panel model.
  • Panel space The generator breaker needs a spot near the main.
  • Cord A matching generator cord can be included.
  • Permit The hookup is permitted and inspected.

2026 cost guides list a generator interlock kit at about $400 to $800 and transfer switch installation at about $1,200 to $1,600. National planning ranges, not our price.

Transfer switch, interlock and inlet box

Manual transfer switch

A manual transfer switch is a small panel mounted beside the main panel with switches for six to ten selected circuits. Each switch flips between utility and generator, so you choose exactly what runs: furnace blower, fridge, freezer, a few lights, the network. It is intuitive for anyone in the house to operate, and it keeps the generator load controlled because only the chosen circuits can connect to it. It suits homes where the main panel has no room for an interlock breaker.

Interlock kit

An interlock is a sliding plate listed for your specific panel that blocks the main breaker from being on while the generator breaker is on, and the other way round. It lets the generator feed the whole panel, and you manage the load by switching off the circuits you do not need, such as the range, dryer and central air. It costs less than a transfer switch and gives more flexibility, but it asks a little more of whoever runs it. We label the panel with a simple step-by-step card.

Inlet box for a portable generator

The inlet box is the outdoor connection point, rated for the generator: a 30-amp inlet for most mid-size portables, a 50-amp inlet for larger ones. It mounts on an outside wall where the generator can sit well away from windows and doors, because generator exhaust is a carbon monoxide risk. We run the cable from the inlet to the transfer switch or the interlock breaker and can supply a matching cord, so hookup during an outage takes a couple of minutes.

Oklahoma City conditions

Multi-day outages are why this matters here

Outages in Oklahoma City can run for days, not hours. Eleven days after the October 2020 ice storm began, the state was still counting more than 42,000 outages in Oklahoma City, along with more than 2,000 in Del City and over 500 in Midwest City. For households that already own a portable generator, a proper inlet and interlock is the difference between running the furnace and the fridge safely through a week like that and running cords through a window.

Step by step

From the generator label to the first test run

  1. Read the generator label

Running watts and outlet type set the inlet and breaker size.

  2. Pick switch or interlock

Based on the panel, the generator and how you want to run it.

  3. Mount inlet and wire it

Outdoor inlet placed well away from openings, cable to the panel.

  4. Install and label

Transfer switch or interlock, with a step-by-step card.

  5. Test with your generator

A real run on the house circuits, with you operating it.
